In Masina Kebele, tucked within Ethiopia’s Adola Woreda, there is a washing station with a story that runs deeper than coffee.

Built in 2017 through a partnership between Project Origin and their trusted local export partners, Primrose, the Guji Masina washing station quickly became a place of discovery. It was here that Project Origin produced its very first Ethiopian Carbonic Maceration coffees, carefully experimenting, learning, and refining a process that would go on to shape the character of many remarkable lots. Every harvest brought new lessons, and every lot carried the memory of those early trials.

Not far from the washing station, a beautiful river winds through the community. For local families, this river is more than part of the landscape. It is part of daily life. Children wade through it on their way to school, and others cross it to reach the town, often facing the choice between the river itself or a long one- to two-hour walk to the nearest safe crossing.

Seeing this need, Project Origin once again joined hands with Primrose, this time to help fund the construction of a bridge. The hope was simple but meaningful: to make everyday journeys safer, easier, and more connected for the people of Masina Kebele.

The coffees from this woreda have long been celebrated around the world, adding to the romance and reputation of Ethiopian coffee. And when a coffee from this very station helped win the 2018 World Barista Championship, Guji Masina’s place in coffee history became undeniable.

This is more than a washing station. It is a place of innovation, community, and connection, where exceptional coffee and meaningful impact meet.
